How to Nurse a Cold

There may not be a cure for the common cold, but there are ways to find relief.

It’s true that with all the advancements in medicine there still appears to be no real cure for the common cold. But there are plenty of remedies, both natural and man made, that can help relieve the symptoms of a cold. Most people have what they consider surefire helpmates that others may find completely ineffective, but here are a few rules to tending a cold that most everyone can agree on…

Rest as much as possible.

Ever spent a day or two at home and then gotten into the car to drive, only then realizing that things weren’t quite right? It is all too easy to think you’re on the mend but then push yourself too hard and make matters worse. If you have sick time available or can afford to rearrange your schedule please rest when you feel the need to.

Pamper yourself.

If a hot bath soothes your aches and helps you breathe better then by all means go for it. Hot herbal tea with honey and lemon is also good. Increase your fluid intake but limit or avoid alcohol until your immune system is stronger. If you can stomach spicy foods like garlic and curries they can help clear out congestion.

Ask for help.

If you’re feeling rotten there are few things nicer than having someone look after you. Whether driving to the store or fixing you homemade soup, being looked after helps you to spend time in the the best way possible, recuperating.

Get a good night’s sleep.

Depending on the severity of your cold you may end up needing cough or sinus medicine just to simply breathe properly, and while laying down to sleep it can be particularly frustrating trying to breathe. Sleep is one of the best healers so even if it means dosing up on nighttime cold and cough medicine the solid night of sleep will most likely seem worth it.

Avoid smoking and smoky bars.

Cigarette smoke is a major irritant to your sinuses and if you have a cold they’re already struggling so why not give them a break? Whenever possible skip the clubs while you have a cold so that you can rest and also avoid passing your sickness on to others.

Get up and move.

While resting is imperative it’s also a good idea to move your body some to help break up congestion. Don’t overtire yourself but if you can go for a short and gentle walk while ill it may help you breathe better afterward.

Again, everyone has their own way of tackling a cold but the truth is it’s often just a matter of waiting it out until you feel right again. So rest when you can, drink plenty of fluids and don’t forget to ask for help, when needed.
