There may not be a cure for the common cold, but there are ways to find relief.

It’s true that with all the advancements in medicine there still appears to be no real cure for the common cold. But there are plenty of remedies, both natural and man made, that can help relieve the symptoms of a cold. Most people have what they consider surefire helpmates that others may find completely ineffective, but here are a few rules to tending a cold that most everyone can agree on…

relief when having a cold

Rest as much as possible.

Ever spent a day or two at home and then gotten into the car to drive, only then realizing that things weren’t quite right? It is all too easy to think you’re on the mend but then push yourself too hard and make matters worse. If you have sick time available or can afford to rearrange your schedule please rest when you feel the need to.

Pamper yourself.

If a hot bath soothes your aches and helps you breathe better then by all means go for it. Hot herbal tea with honey and lemon is also good. Increase your fluid intake but limit or avoid alcohol until your immune system is stronger. If you can stomach spicy foods like garlic and curries they can help clear out congestion.

Ask for help.

If you’re feeling rotten there are few things nicer than having someone look after you. Whether driving to the store or fixing you homemade soup, being looked after helps you to spend time in the the best way possible, recuperating.

Get a good night’s sleep.

Depending on the severity of your cold you may end up needing cough or sinus medicine just to simply breathe properly, and while laying down to sleep it can be particularly frustrating trying to breathe. Sleep is one of the best healers so even if it means dosing up on nighttime cold and cough medicine the solid night of sleep will most likely seem worth it.

Avoid smoking and smoky bars.

Cigarette smoke is a major irritant to your sinuses and if you have a cold they’re already struggling so why not give them a break? Whenever possible skip the clubs while you have a cold so that you can rest and also avoid passing your sickness on to others.

girl cold

Get up and move.

While resting is imperative it’s also a good idea to move your body some to help break up congestion. Don’t overtire yourself but if you can go for a short and gentle walk while ill it may help you breathe better afterward.

Again, everyone has their own way of tackling a cold but the truth is it’s often just a matter of waiting it out until you feel right again. So rest when you can, drink plenty of fluids and don’t forget to ask for help, when needed.

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is a condition that causes the cells in the skin to grow abnormally. It typically affects the areas that are frequently exposed to the skin (i.e. face, neck, arms, legs,) but it can develop on other parts of the body. There are three types of skin cancer melanoma, squamos cell carcinoma and basal cell carcimona. Squamos cell and basal carcimona are more common than melanoma. However, melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and the number of people being diagnosed with it has increased drastically over the past few years.

detecting and treating skin cancer

Who is at risk for developing skin cancer?

People who have fair skin are at the highest risk for developing skin condition. Melanin is the pigment that protects the skin from dangerous UV rays. Those who have light skin have less melanin in their skin. Moles, sunburns, weakened immune system and family history also make a person more susceptible to developing skin cancer.

What are some of the symptoms of skin cancer?

An odd-looking mole is the first symptom that most people with skin cancer recognize. The type of mole that a person has depends on the type of skin cancer that he or she has. People who have basal cell carcimona may notice a flat, waxy bump. Those who have squamos cell carcimona may notice a firm, red nodule. A large, dark spot with speckles is a common sign of melanoma. Additionally, a change in preexisting mole may also indicate skin cancer.

How can skin cancer be treated?

Today there are a number of treatment options available for those who have skin cancer. If the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body, the doctor may recommend freezing, laser therapy or excisional surgery. Freezing is a procedure that uses liquid nitrogen to destroy the keratoses (areas of hardened growth.)

Excisional surgery is a procedure where the surgeon removes the cancerous tissue. The doctor may also choose to remove some of the surrounding healthy skin. Laser therapy is a procedure that uses a beam of light to destroy the cancerous growth.

If the doctor finds that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body or that surgery is not a feasible option, he or she may recommend radiation or chemotherapy. Radiation uses ionizing radiation to destroy the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy is a form of therapy that uses chemicals to destroy cancerous cells. The doctor may also order biological therapy, which is a procedure that helps boost the immune system so that the body is more apt to fight cancer.

Can skin cancer be prevented?

In most cases, skin cancer can be prevented. The sun’s UV rays are strongest between the hours of 10 A.M. and 4 P.M. Limiting sun exposure during those times can help prevent skin cancer. If a person has to spend a large amount of time in the sun, he or she should wear sunscreen.

People should also make sure that they avoid using tanning beds because they have also been shown to increase the risk of skin cancer. It is also important to note that skin cancer is much easier to treat if it is detected early enough. For that reason, people should always check their skin for suspicious-looking moles.

Pros & Cons of Dulera – Is there another alternative?

Recently, FDA, the Food and Drug Administration passed a drug that can help one take control of asthma, a non-curable but commonly known disease. The name is Dulera. Its addition to a short list of other treatments that all have the same objective, such as Advair, Foradil Symbicort, and Serevent, to reduce the frequency of asthma attacks. But the ingredients drastically separate these medicines to which are the lesser of evils. I have family members and close friends that face mild to severe asthma, once I was aware of this new development, I became very intrigued to learn more.

asthma

Well, Merck & Co. developed Dulera as the new breakthrough treatment for helping those with mild to severe uncontrolled asthma manage and reduce the frequency of asthma attacks. The drug contains two prime components, both with their own unique function . With careful moderation, the use of this dual ingredient treatment eventually clearing inflammatory from the lungs and airways, to breathe more easily. But there’s one little (big) setback with Dulera, your life could be at stake!

Similar to the other popular asthma treatment, Serevent and Foradil, Dulera consists one of the main deadly component, formoterol fumarate. This risky drug stems from the Long-Acting Beta Agonist (LABAs) known to secretly cause build up of additional inflammation in the air passages causing severe damage, ultimately death. Containment of this single element has given Dulera, and competitors, the highest warning label by FDA standards. FDA authorize Dulera to packaged itself in an all black box and have a detailed warning content label stating the risk of consumption, the aforementioned risk above according to FDA.org.

The lesser of the two, inhaled corticosteroid, is the second component comprising of Dulera. It acts as a balancing act of the two in a way made up of mometasome furoate. This ingredient acts as a helping agent to open airways from the inflammatory build up that cause asthma attacks, by relaxing the muscles in the lungs and air passages to be able to comfortably breathe.

With a more knowledge than what I started with about Dulera, I would strongly recommend this treatment to loved ones. This treatment seems to have the complete solution in just one single puff. But beware, once asthma is sustained and able to control with a single ingredient remedy of inhaled corticosteroid, reduce use of Dulera. The consequences are deadly.

Studies have shown that certain groups of food increase asthma symptons such as milk, gluten, and eggs. Madeline Binder, contributor of this article and owner of www.super-science-fair-projects.com, has severe asthma and finds that eliminating these foods from her diet she is able to keep her ashtma under control. She explains her experiment: experiment, “I eliminated one food group at a time to see if there was a difference in my symptoms while staying on my meds. Then, under the supervision of my doctor, I gradually came off the meds.”

Diabetes, and how it can be recognized.

When a human being is busy in his day to day schedule and experience certain changes in health and routine, he or she must immediately go for a health check up. It can be any unknown disease growing in the body outside your knowledge. If you begin with the treatment at early stages, any disease can be cured or controlled. One of the most common illness people are suffering from generations to generations is diabetes.
Diabetes occurs due to many reasons like high sugar and salt intake, tension, pressure, not enough sleep, etc. We should have a proper knowledge about the drawbacks we would face if we are being careless with our health. One can easily make out about diabetes through some general symptoms that are usually found in diabetic patients.

The primary symptom of being a diabetic is frequent urination known as Polyuria in medical terms. Mostly people experience excessive urination in winter season that is quite normal but excessive urination except winter season can point a finger towards diabetes. If one observes this problem should seek immediate check up that is very important.

diabetes

The second important symptom correlated with urination is excessive thirst. If one feels thirsty extra-ordinarily and keeps on drinking water repeatedly, then they should consult to a doctor and go through a diabetes check up. Excessive thirst will lead to excessive urination and both are strong symptoms of diabetes.

Another important symptom can be excessive hunger. If you feel hungry all the time even though you consume food regularly, it can be diabetes. Even after eating loads of food your weight keeps on decreasing each day is another symptom of diabetes. A person experiencing excessive hunger and unexplained weight loss simultaneously should immediately undergo a checkup.

One of the most problematic situations with diabetic patients are slow healing of wounds. When someone gets any hurt or wound, it does not heal speedily and the condition keeps on deteriorating. This sometimes leads to the cutting out of the wounded part from the body. So analyze thoroughly and if a wound does not recover promptly, consult a doctor.

Diabetic patients also catch infections very easily. So if you find any of the above symptoms and could not consult a doctor immediately, try staying away from infected people suffering from jaundice, malaria, typhoid, etc.

Sometimes an individual notice weird behavior in an individual, the mental status keeps changing and mood switches quickly. These things should not be ignored and we should seek a medical help as soon as possible.

People also suffer from eyesight issues like blurry vision when suffering from diabetes. Blurry vision also comes along with age but it is better to see a doctor and clarify about eyesight problem or diabetes. Taking risk all the time does not work.

These are some important symptoms predicting an individual suffering from diabetes. It is better to take precautions in advance and control our hands on sugar and salt intake. Have proper sleep and avoid taking tensions. Practicing this can keep you away from diabetes.

To root out any problem it is best to focus on it early. Therefore, it is important to start with a good web host rather than lose sleep over it later. HostingCoupons.org makes it easy by listing the best dedicated servers and the top vps hosting

Quick tips to help you avoid getting sick during flu and cold season

As we head into the cold and flu season, we all become a bit more conscious of random sneezes and coughs throughout the workplace, public transport or supermarket. If you work in high risk zones like schools or hospitals, you may be even more susceptible to catching a cold or flu virus. Parents also run a high risk, as they are put in the position of caring for the contagious. Even in these risky situations, there are measures that you can take that will keep you as safe from contracting a virus as you can be.

cold flu sneeze

Prevent The Spread Of Germs:

The first aspect of protection against contracting an illness is to be vigilant with your personal hygiene. If you know someone around you is sick, you should be sure to encourage certain practices, like sneezing or coughing into a tissue, to avoid spreading bodily fluids or airborne particles.
One should always be attentive to hand washing at many intervals throughout the day. This includes but is not limited to when making food, after using the restroom, and before you eat. You need to adopt more attentive hand washing techniques when someone in your home is exhibiting signs of a cold or a flu. Avoid sharing items such as cups or utensils, but also avoid sharing toothpaste tubes, pillows, blankets or other personal items.

Rest Often, Eat Well:

Get as much rest as you can, including naps and taking down time. Your immune system works better when you’re well rested. Your immune system also works better when equipped with proper nutrition daily. Lots of leafy greens, garlic and healthy proteins are ideal for fighting illness, though remember to check with your doctor before changing your diet significantly.

Disinfect Common Germ-Heavy Areas:

Consider common household objects that are shared and used communally. These objects are often overlooked as places to clean, and should be disinfected with bleach or vinegar especially in times of family illness. Some things you may want to pay close attention to include your stove or microwave, your door knobs and towels, as well as cupboard doors, light switches, lamps and faucets.

Hydrate and Avoid Alcohol or Coffee:

Anytime you are battling against an illness or working against contracting one, your body needs to be regularly hydrated. Alcohol and coffee dehydrate your system, so they should both be avoided. Instead, stick to water and highly-nutritious drinks, like juice. Be careful to watch the sugar content, however – some juices are more harmful than helpful.

3 Easy solutions to lower back pain

We often seem to experience a lot of tightness in our lower back.
Body talk might indicate fear of sex, especially in women.
In any case, many of us suffer from tautness in that area, which we experience as pain.

The simplest movement to release the tightness is:
· Standing up, feet shoulder-width apart, with knees bent a little

lower back pain

This gives you the freedom to move your hips forward and back.
So, we do this gently for a while and feel the relief in the lower back.
This is actually a great gentle stretching exercise for lower back pain.

Now, another great and simple exercise can also be done:
· Sitting down, spine straight, you lower your shoulders (the opposite of holding them up with tension) and ‘throw’ them gently back.

You then straighten the curve of your neck so it’s aligned with your spine by simply gently lowering your chin and pushing it back as if it’s on a horizontal rail.
What you do next is turn the waist (and thus the whole torso) very gently and for this part you put your right hand on the outside of your left knee and help yourself turn the waist to the left by simply pulling on the knee.

You repeat the same movement on the other side, and several times on each side.
Make it a continuous movement!

An important point to remember while you do this exercise is to:
· hold your stomach in while breathing
· keep your spine straight

A very nice way to finish is – and definitely the easiest of these 3 methods – either standing or sitting is to rub your lower back up and down the spine with both hands.

Dislodging tightness from the body in this way helps us not only to chase away tension and avoid possible complications, especially as we advance in age, but also to remain easy-going in our body, to enjoy its physical sensations and making our vital energy circulate, flowing and thereby avoiding any blockage that might turn into a more severe physical condition.

lower back pain

We so often see older people hunched over as they move around, it’s a pity they have not learned to look after their body better with simple exercises at an earlier stage in their life.

These exercises are very easy to perform at any age, even for the chair-bound.

To provide easy exercises for any age group and especially for seniors, Francoise Bonhoure, a qualified Seniors Exercise teacher (for Over and Under 50’s!), has created a Best Exercise Program for Baby Boomers.

Answers About Hemorrhoid Banding

When something having to do with your hindquarters feels wrong, it can be very scary. If the pain and discomfort wasn’t enough, the embarrassment about possibly having to get your backside checked out by a doctor can be cringe-worthy. However, it’s good to know what to expect if, in fact, you are afflicted with hemorrhoids. Here are some helpful facts to help ease your mind.

1) How do I know if I have hemorrhoids? OK, first thing’s first—positive identification. Physical symptoms of hemorrhoids include itching, pain, inflammation, and an unnatural feeling of fullness, even after you have had a bowel movement. Visual signs may include red, bloody stools, toilet tissue or evidence of blood in the toilet bowl. However, blood can also be a symptom of colorectal cancer, so it is important to get to a doctor either way.

2) Why did I get them? Both men and women are afflicted with the condition, and they can occur from anything that would put undue pressure on the rectal veins. This can include childbirth and pregnancy, obesity, heavy lifting, constipation or diarrhea, eating an unbalanced diet or even sitting for extended periods of time on a regular basis. Hemorrhoids are common, and the good news is that they aren’t usually serious medical problems.

3) How does banding treat hemorrhoids? Banding is an extremely effective, safe hemorrhoid treatment. This method doesn’t require surgical removal, but rather using small rubber bands to cut off the blood circulation to the tissue near the hemorrhoids. Cutting off blood flow causes hemorrhoids to fall off within one to five days, and there is typically no evidence that you can see with the naked eye.

4) Is it painful? Does it work? Another benefit is that the procedure is virtually painless. In order to band the hemorrhoid, gentle suction is used, which lessens the chance of bleeding or pain during the procedure. Afterwards, it is possible to feel a little bit of dull aching or feeling of fullness, but over the counter medication can make these go away.

Banding typically works. However, for larger/more severe hemorrhoids, it may take more than one band or banding session for effective removal.

5) Will my insurance cover banding? Typically, banding can be done with little or no cost to you. Most insurance plans—including Medicare—cover the procedure. If you are unsure or would like to confirm banding insurance coverage, call the medical office in which you anticipate having the procedure done.

“Scoliosis” is one of those words that every stops and looks when they hear it roll off some one’s lips regardless if it’s in the middle of a crowded room or sitting outside at a quiet café. Perhaps it’s because of the condition’s relatively mysterious and unknown origins or maybe it’s because virtually everybody knows at least one person with the neuro-muscular condition (it does affect almost 5% of the population).

Scoliosis is technically defined as a lateral bending of the spine that creates a spinal curvature that is larger than 10 degreed, but the surprising fact is that the spinal curvature itself is actually the primary symptom of scoliosis! I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true the spinal curvature itself is the primary sign and symptom of scoliosis; allow me to explain.

Scoliosis is a multi-factorial condition in which genetic pre-disposition and environmental factors combine to generate an abnormal neurological adaptation to spinal alignment during adolescent (mostly females) during times of rapid growth spurts. Thus, the true cause of idiopathic scoliosis is the environmental triggers that activate the genetic pre-disposition and unleash the cascade of events leading to scoliosis brace treatment and scoliosis surgery.

Some of the other concerns in terms of signs and symptoms of scoliosis include spinal deformity and pulmonary function (ability to breathe). While these are certainly valid concerns, the former is primarily a cosmetic concern and the latter is only valid in extremely severe scoliosis and almost never fatal if the spinal curvature developed after the age of 5 years old. In contrast, the very scoliosis treatments that are intended to halt curve progression (scoliosis braces) and correct the curvature (scoliosis surgery) often increase the amount of spinal deformity and further reduce the vital breathing capacity.

One topic under the banner of “signs and symptoms of scoliosis” that receives little to no attention are the quality of life concerns of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in adulthood. Recent research has discovered that adults with scoliosis spine curves 10 degrees or greater scored lower on 7 out of 8 major quality of life categories in comparison to a non-scoliosis adult population. These categories included physical functioning, general health, social functioning, and body pain among others. The researchers even concluded “adult scoliosis is becoming a medical condition with significant impact, affecting the fastest growing segment of the population of our society to a previously unrecognized degree.”

It’s clear that the signs and symptoms of scoliosis are generally dismissed or ignored in the general health care area and a significant number of our teenagers are having their life’s significantly impacted in a profound and adverse manner. Increased scoliosis screenings, both in terms of prevalence and effectiveness, need to come to the forefront if we are ever going to move scoliosis treatment into a pro-active health care model, rather than the reactive health care model currently in place.

You might have heard about trigeminal neuralgia, but what is it exactly? Here are the facts, plain and simple. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an extremely painful condition that is caused by a dysfunction of the trigeminal nerve. This nerve is present on both sides of the face and splits into three separate branches. The ophthalmic nerve and maxillary nerve transmit sensory information through the trigeminal nerve to the brain, while the mandibular nerve is responsible not only for sensory input but also for certain motor functions of the jaw. Pressure on any of these branches or on the trigeminal nerves or ganglia can create severe, stabbing pains that might feel like electric shocks to the face, eyes, or jaw. TN pain is difficult to control with pain-relieving medication due to the proximity of the trigeminal nerve to the brain.
TriggersIn affected individuals some everyday activities can trigger TN episodes, including:

• Brushing teeth

• Shaving

• Washing the face

• Eating, especially chewing

• Drinking

• Talking

• Singing

Audio stimuli (loud music, crowd noise, and high-pitched tones) can also trigger episodes of TN. CausesWhile the causes for some cases of TN are not well understood, some individuals suffer from TN due to multiple sclerosis, tumors of the trigeminal nerve or other injuries to the nerves. Aneurysms can also trigger TN due to the pressure they can place on the delicate trigeminal nerve sheath. Tumors are one of the most treatable causes for TN; surgical procedures can often relieve the pressure on the trigeminal nerve and provide significant reductions in the pain felt by TN sufferers. Some cases of TN cannot be linked to any specific cause; these cases are more common in sufferers over the age of 40.

Pharmaceutical Treatments In some cases, prescription medications may be used to relieve the pain associated with TN. These medications fall into three basic categories. Muscle relaxants like Baclofen or Clonazepam help by relieving pressure against the nerve.
Anti-seizure drugs are often used as primary sources of pain relief and can provide good results in some cases of TN. These drugs include:

• Gabapentin

• Carbamazepine

• Lamotrigine

• Phenytoin

Finally, antidepressants can sometimes offer some relief from the stabbing pains of TN. Commonly prescribed antidepressants are:

• Amitriptyline

• Nortripyline

These medications typically offer short-term relief for the symptoms of TN, but cannot provide lasting reductions in pain for sufferers.
Surgical TreatmentsIn many cases, TN can be treated with surgical procedures. These offer lasting hope for TN sufferers because they address the source of the problem rather than the symptoms; surgical techniques can often relieve the pressure on the trigeminal nerve or reduce the capacity of the nerve to transmit the pain. Stereotactic radiosurgery and endoscopic procedures are often successfully used to treat trigeminal neuralgia.

[ad]

We tend to think that snoring is something that affects others more than it affects us – meaning the people that have to try and sleep while we’re snoring get the worst part of it. But this isn’t exactly true. Snoring keeps you from entering deeps states of sleep and you will not wake up feeling as rested as you could. It may also be the cause or the symptom of an underlying condition, so you should do what you can to reduce the snoring. We’ve put together a set of things you can try to reduce or even utterly stop you snoring sessions but if you feel that it is having a great impact on your life and on the way you sleep, as well as others around you, you should see a doctor.

1 Keep your heartburn in check

Though seemingly unrelated, heartburn and snoring have a profound relation. This is because the acid reflux from your stomach irritates the airways. The way to reduce and ultimately stop heartburn healthily is to change your diet, and you should consult a specialist to help you with that.

5 ways to stop snoring

2 Make time for sleep

You should be sleeping between 7 to 9 hours a night – some people need the full 9, for some 7 is enough to feel rested. Not sleeping enough will make you snore more. Partners of light to intense snorers report that snoring is longer and noisier if the person is tired. If you regularly get enough sleep your body will adjust to the new schedule very quickly and it will reduce tiredness when it’s time to go back to bed.

3 Avoid sleeping pills

While it’s true that taking a sleeping pill will help you sleep more deeply – or at least it will feel that way – there’s a chance that your snoring will increase in volume and in length. This is because sleeping aids are light sedatives that will further relax the airways, making snoring more frequent. And remember how we talked about snoring preventing you from going into a deeper sleep? This is also true even when you take sleeping pills, so you may be doing more harm than good by taking them.

[ad]

4 Work out early

It’s a common misconception that working out will get you tired and ready for bed quicker. And although you might get really tired, your heart rate will be elevated and your body will be ready for action, making it harder to sleep and to achieve those deep sleep states that you should be hitting at night. So work out earlier in the day, enjoy the adrenalin rush it gives you and save night time for relaxation.

5 Cut back on coffee and alcohol

Coffee is well known to be a stimulant, so it will make it harder for you to fall asleep and even once you do it’ll be harder to sleep deeper. Alcohol does the opposite thing: it will relax you and basically do the same to snoring that the sleeping pill does. Keeping away from both before bed will help you snore less and sleep much better.
