Hypothyroidism symptoms

When the thyroid produces insufficient thyroid hormone, it is called hypotyroidism. Hypo means insufficient, and thyroid is the name of the gland, which is found in the neck below the thyroid cartilage (Adam’s apple) and around the same level as the cricoid cartilage. The thyroid controls how the body dealst with its energy, proteins, the other hormones in the body.

Hypothyroidism causes a slow metabolism.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism can be:

- fatigue

- sleepiness

- fuzzy feeling

- gaining weight

- water retention

- hairloss

- dry and easily breaking hair

- constipation

- feeling cold

- apathy

- sometimes depressive feelings

Other symptoms that sometimes occur:

- slowed down heartbeat

- less appetite

- change in voice

- irregular menstruation

- children: delayed development
